Family photos are a beautiful way to capture the love and connection you share, but if you’re worried about how your little one will handle the session—don’t stress! As a photographer specializing in maternity, newborn, and family photography in Snyder, Lubbock, and Midland, Texas, I’ve worked with plenty of kiddos, and I promise we can create a relaxed and fun experience. Here are some tried-and-true tips to help your child feel comfortable and happy during their session!

1. Keep It Light and Fun

Kids pick up on their parents’ emotions, so if you’re relaxed and having fun, they’ll be more likely to do the same! Treat your session as a fun adventure rather than something stressful, and your child will follow your lead.

2. Bring a Favorite Toy or Comfort Item

Does your little one have a stuffed animal or small toy they love? Bringing a familiar item can help them feel more at ease. Plus, it can make for some adorable, sentimental photos!

3. Let Them Be Themselves

Some kids love to pose, while others prefer to run and play. I embrace both! Instead of worrying about getting the “perfect” shot, let your child’s personality shine. Candid moments often turn out to be the most treasured ones.

4. Plan Around Their Best Time of Day

Every child has a time of day when they’re happiest. If they’re early risers, consider a morning session. If they’re more energetic in the afternoon, that might be the best time. Scheduling around their natural rhythm can make a big difference.

5. Dress Them Comfortably

Choose outfits that are both cute and comfortable. If your child isn’t a fan of fancy clothes, opt for something soft and cozy that won’t make them fidget. Neutral tones and soft colors also photograph beautifully!

6. Don’t Stress the Smiles

Not every photo needs to have a big, cheesy grin! Sometimes the sweetest moments are the quiet, thoughtful ones or those filled with laughter and movement. I’ll guide your family into natural interactions so we capture genuine joy.

7. Pack Snacks (Just in Case!)

A little hunger can quickly turn into frustration, so having a small, mess-free snack on hand can be a lifesaver. Avoid anything too sticky or colorful that could get on clothing.

8. Trust the Process

As a mom and a photographer, I understand that kids don’t always follow the plan—and that’s okay! My goal is to create a relaxed, fun atmosphere where your child feels comfortable being themselves. If they need a little break or a moment to explore, we’ll roll with it.
