Planning your newborn photography session can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. As a West Texas newborn photographer, I often get the same questions from parents preparing for their little one’s first photoshoot. This FAQ guide answers the most common questions so you can feel confident and prepared.

1. When is the Best Time to Schedule a Newborn Session?

The perfect time to book is when you find out you are expecting. Booking early ensures you get the session date that works best for your family, and gets you on my calendar. If your baby arrives early, or late, we will just adjust your date accordingly. Then we will get you into my studio within the first 7–14 days after birth. During this time, babies are naturally sleepier, curl up more easily, and are more comfortable being gently posed.

2. What Should We Wear for the Photos?

Coordinate colors between family members, keeping outfits simple and neutral for timeless images. Avoid bold patterns or logos. For outdoor lifestyle newborn sessions, bring a simple onesie or outfit, and I can help you select colors that complement your family. Accessories like blankets or small props can enhance your session while keeping the focus on your baby, just let me know ahead of time what you would like to bring.

3. Will My Baby Be Posed on a Beanbag or Props?

Studio sessions include the classic naked baby on a beanbag poses, props and wraps for curated portraits. For outdoor lifestyle sessions, babies are photographed wrapped and in a simple onesie, with optional props.

4. How Long Does a Newborn Session Take?

All newborn sessions are baby led and typically a session lasts 2–4 hours, allowing time for feeding, diaper changes, and soothing your baby. My goal is a calm environment so every moment feels authentic and beautiful.

5. Do You Travel for Sessions?

Yes! I offer travel for outdoor lifestyle newborn sessions in Lubbock, Abilene, Midland, and surrounding West Texas areas. I can also bring the studio experience to you. We’ll select a location that’s safe, comfortable, and visually stunning.

6. Should Siblings Wear Matching Outfits?

Not necessary, but coordinating colors can create cohesive, timeless images. I provide guidance to make it simple and stress-free.

7. How Long Does it Take to Receive Final Images?

Final images are typically delivered within 3-5 weeks after your session, however we are in touch before then to select your images. I personally edit every image and provide high-resolution digital files and offer prints, albums, and wall art for a complete heirloom experience.

8. What Should We Bring to Our Session?

Bring your diaper bag with all the essentials, along with breast milk or formula if needed. My studio is comfortable and private, so you’re welcome to breastfeed or pump during the session. I also recommend bringing snacks for yourselves and small toys or snacks for older siblings to keep them happy between photos.

If you happen to forget anything, don’t worry — I keep diapers and wipes on hand, and there’s a full kitchen available to warm bottles or store milk in the fridge. My goal is for you to feel completely comfortable and taken care of throughout your session.

9. What if my baby is older than 10 days?

That’s absolutely okay! Newborns in the 5–10 day window are often sleepier, which makes some of the classic sleepy poses a bit easier to achieve. If your baby is older, we may have fewer opportunities for those exact poses, but we’ll still capture beautiful, authentic images that reflect your baby’s personality and this special season of life. Every age has its own charm, and your gallery will be filled with timeless, meaningful portraits.

10. How Should We Prepare Our Baby for the Session?

Plan to feed them right before the session begins so they arrive sleepy and content. Dress your baby in something loose and easy to remove to avoid waking them when we start. Don’t worry if things don’t go perfectly, newborn sessions are completely baby-led, and we’ll take breaks as needed to keep everyone comfortable and relaxed.
