Choosing your OB-GYN is one of the most important decisions you’ll make during pregnancy, yet it’s often treated like one box to check.

This is the person who will walk with you through pregnancy, birth, postpartum recovery, and often years of women’s health care beyond that. They will be present during one of the most vulnerable, emotional, and life-changing moments of your life.

Finding the right fit matters.

This guide is designed to help you confidently choose an OB-GYN who aligns with you, your values, and your vision for birth.

A Personal Perspective

As a mom and a maternity and newborn photographer, I’ve walked through two pregnancies of my own, and I’ve heard and witnessed the birth stories of many others through the families I serve.

Unfortunately, not everyone has a pleasant experience, and many difficult stories begin with their OB-GYN relationship.

I was incredibly fortunate to have a wonderful OB-GYN team for both of my births. So when I hear stories of moms whose doctors don’t listen to them, don’t take their concerns seriously, schedule inductions for convenience, or simply aren’t a good fit, it truly makes my heart hurt for them.

Pregnancy is such a beautiful, but also vulnerable and sometimes scary time in a woman’s life. You have emotions and hormones running high, your body is changing, and everything feels new. The last thing you should be worrying about is whether the person delivering your baby is actually on your team.

I created this guide after talking with many moms, some who had wonderful experiences and some who didn’t, to help expectant parents know what to look for and what to keep in mind when choosing their provider.

Why Choosing the Right OB-GYN Matters

Your provider influences:

• How supported you feel during pregnancy

• How much autonomy you have during labor

• Whether your birth preferences are respected

• How postpartum care is handled

A positive birth experience doesn’t happen by accident. It starts with the right team.

Step 1: Research Your OB-GYN Options

You are allowed, and encouraged, to research your provider. Not all providers approach pregnancy and birth the same way. Some lean toward higher medical intervention, while others support low-intervention births when medically appropriate.

Things you can (and should) look up or ask directly:

• Do they take your insurance?

• What are their C-section rates?

• How do they approach induction?

• Are they supportive of VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean)?

• How do they handle birth plans?

Professional organizations like American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists can offer general guidance on pregnancy care, but your individual provider’s philosophy will shape your personal experience.

Step 2: Interview Your Potential Provider

Think of early appointments as an interview.

Your OB-GYN should:

• Answer questions clearly and respectfully

• Explain why they recommend certain interventions

• Encourage informed decision-making

• Make you feel safe asking anything

• Do not rush you

Know Your Non-Negotiables

Before committing to a provider, define your non-negotiables.

Examples might include:

• VBAC support

• Minimal intervention when medically appropriate

• Respect for your birth plan

• Clear, compassionate communication

If a provider does not align with your non-negotiables, it is okay to move on, even if they’re popular, highly recommended, or convenient.

You Should Never Feel Dismissed

One of the biggest red flags is how a provider responds to your questions.

If they:

• Make you feel dumb for asking

• Dismiss your concerns

• Mock or shame your preferences

• That is not care. That is control.

Red Flags to Take Seriously

If you experience any of the following, pause and reassess:

• Fear-based language instead of education

• Arguing your delivery plan during routine appointments

• Hijacking appointments to pressure decisions

• Becoming intimidating or dismissive toward you or your children

• Showing more interest in your partner than in you as the patient

If something feels off, trust that feeling.

You are always allowed to get a second opinion, or switch providers entirely.

VBAC-Specific Guidance

If you want a VBAC at all, choose a provider who actively supports it.

One reminder many moms share:

•  Do not schedule a repeat C-section if you truly want to attempt a VBAC.

Scheduling can become a mental deadline that works against your goals.

Step 3: Consider Office & Hospital Logistics

These details affect your experience more than you might expect:

• Will you see the same provider each visit or rotate?

• Who is on call when you deliver?

• How responsive is the office to calls or concerns?

• Which hospital or birth center do they deliver at?

What are the hospital’s policies on:

• Doulas?

• Birthing tubs?

• Visitor limits?

A great doctor in a chaotic system can still create unnecessary stress.

Step 4: Ask About Postpartum Support

Birth is not the finish line, it’s the beginning.

Ask:

• How are postpartum concerns handled?

• Do they screen for postpartum depression?

• Are lactation consultants available?

• How accessible is support after delivery?

Postpartum care is just as important as prenatal care.

Step 5: Understand Their Philosophy on Induction & Due Dates

Providers vary widely on:

• How long they allow pregnancies to go past due

• When they recommend induction

• How patient they are with labor progression

These philosophies directly shape birth outcomes.

Have a Plan With Room for Flexibility

Going into birth with “whatever happens will happen” often leaves moms feeling unprepared.

Have a plan.

Know your preferences.

Advocate for yourself.

At the same time, understand flexibility may be necessary if safety becomes a concern. The goal is always a healthy mom and baby, but your wishes should still be respected whenever possible.

One Final Truth Moms Need to Hear

You are never locked in.

You can switch providers:

• Early pregnancy

• Late pregnancy

• After a gut-check moment

You deserve care that feels supportive, empowering, and aligned.

A Note from Brandyl Calley Photography

As a maternity and newborn photographer, I have the privilege of meeting families right at the start of their newest chapter. One thing I’ve seen time and time again is how much a birth experience shapes those first precious days with a new baby.

Choosing the right OB-GYN is one of the first important decisions in your baby’s journey, and it can have a lasting impact on how you remember this season for years to come.

And it’s always an honor for me to help capture the beautiful moments that follow.
